While it is very hard for every patient to find unrelated match in the registry, minorities face an even starker challenge. Even of those who are registered, many are either not able to be located or not willing to donate when called. Caucasian patients are able to find a donor about 75% of the time while for Asians is is only 40%, 45% for Hispanics. By race, the percentage of donors registered willing and locatable for donation are 65% for Caucasians, 47% for Hispanics, 44% for Asians, and 34% for African-Americans. More than 1,000 people die each year because they cannot find a match, which is hardest for multi-racial patients.
